Important Note:
You should know that money was stolen from our room safe by the hotel staff during our stay, so we recommend you stay elsewhere. There are a lot of better options of accommodations in this area to justify a night at this hotel, whether or not our money was stolen. Despite this event, we will discuss each individual section honestly as we experienced without prejudice, but not before explaining what happened.
We'll start off by saying that the in-room safe was complicated to set with your own code. After several attempts to set the code on the first night, we finally managed to set our own safe code. We required the staff to open the safe for us on 2 separate occasions before figuring out how to set the code and getting it to work. (The main problem was that the instructions provided for setting the safe code were different than the steps that you had to take to set it.) Two separate staff members came on those occasions to reset the code (and open the safe), without any additional keys. To get into the safe once you set the code was as simple as punching in a master code that cleared the old code and opened the safe. After our initial problems, we used the in-room safe without any problems for as few days until we returned from the beach on our final night and could not open the safe again. All of a sudden, our code did not work. Initially we didn't give much thought to this and called the main reception to open the safe for us again. This time a third person came and opened the safe. We were going into the safe to get the money to pay for an additional night at the hotel as we had extended our stay by 1 night earlier that day. When we got our wallet and counted our money, we realized we were missing Rs.2000 from the Rs.10,000 that we had. As soon as we discovered there was money missing, we went to the front desk to discuss what had happened. After speaking to the person at the desk and the manager over the phone, the manager finally came down from his office to speak to us in person. At this point we realized that someone must of went into our safe and that is why our code did not work. We explained this to the manager, but he refused to take any responsibility and kept telling us we must have spent it. This was simply not true because we label the money we leave in a room safe when we are not there. (Unfortunately the label fell to the bottom of the wallet so the person who took it probably did not notice it was there. There were other currencies in the wallet that were also labeled and left untouched.) Read our 'How To Avoid Being Ripped-off On Your Next Holiday' for details on how we've learned to protect us from this kind of thing. The hotel manager insisted that he can't do anything for us because he would be admitting that his staff stole, which he was not willing to admit. He claimed that only two people knew the code to reset the safe, including himself, so it was not possible for one of his staff to take the money. Since we already knew that 3 staff members, not including him, knew how to open the safe, we could tell he didn't know how many of his staff actually knew the code. After several minutes of "discussing" this, we asked to phone the police when the manager told his staff not to tell us the phone number or give us the phone. We insisted and eventually got them to let us use their phone only to find out they gave us the wrong number. At this point, we decided to cut our losses and packed up our stuff and left. We should also mention that the staff did not seem too surprised by our claims which makes us believe that they were well aware of it.
Inquiries:
You can visit the hotel's website at: jewelinn.in or check out Hotels.com for the best deals on other accommodations in Goa, India.
Location:
Although the hotel staff will make you believe that every taxi will know where the hotel is located, the truth is that they don't. We quickly learned that not many people in the area knew of the hotel as our taxi driver had trouble finding it even by asking several individuals in the vicinity of the hotel. When we finally found the hotel, it was easy to find again.
Despite the trouble of finding the hotel, we liked the location. The hotel is located approximately 5 minutes by walk from Calangute beach, Dominos Pizza and a decent Indian supermarket. The part of the beach that's close to the hotel is cleaner and quieter than the central part, which we preferred. The central part of the beach was about a 30 minute walk along the beach, but it was much busier and consisted mainly of local tourists.
Room Comfort:
The room we stayed in was very spacious and had a large en-suite bathroom. The bed was soft, perhaps because it was a sponge mattress, which depending on your preference could be bothersome. There was good in-wall A/C and a large ceiling fan that was fairly effective. We found the room fairly comfortable which we largely attribute to its large size because we were able to unpack and spread out.
As mentioned, the washroom was also spacious which we liked. The water pressure in the shower was good and there were no problems with having hot water during our stay. The main problem that we had with the shower was that everything got wet while we showered due to the positioning of the shower head. The other issues were that the bathroom fan was very loud and there were cobwebs in the bathroom. These were relatively minor problems with the bathroom that didn't impact our experience.
If you do decide to stay at this hotel, stay away from the rooms near the elevator because the elevator plays an awful loud sound when in motion which would be disturbing in rooms near the elevator.
Cleanliness:
Although the hotel only opened in December of 2008, the furniture was already a bit worn, there were cobwebs in the bathroom and there were stains on the curtains. Despite these minor signs of aging, the room was relatively clean.
Service:
On our arrival, we were given mango juice which was good. Check-in was fairly straight forward as the main concern of the staff was payment for the room. When we arrived in our room, we realized that our mini-fridge was empty, although it was accompanied by a price list, so were were a bit worried that we would be given a bill for items we didn't consume which didn't turn out to be an issue because they don't fill the fridges. Service at breakfast was slow, but sufficient.
Food:
The fixed menu for breakfast had limited choices, but the food was fairly good and consisted of a mix of Western and/or Indian food.
Overall Value:
This hotel markets itself as a "Three Star (Boutique) Resort" but certainly does not live up to expectations to justify spending a night here at any cost. Aside from having some money stolen from our in-room safe by the hotel staff, there are too many other problems to justify staying here, especially if you are paying the full posted rate.
Other than what we already described, this "resort" also publishes false information on their website. For example, they state on their website that they have "Wifi internet access", a "Well equipped gymnasium", and a "Travel Desk", all of which are false. First, there is no Wi-Fi or any other internet service available at the hotel. The reality is that they never had it, nor do they plan on getting it. Second, although they do in fact have a "gymnasium", located in the hallway between the elevator and the second floor, the term "well-equipped" is misleading. They have a limited number of dumbbells (to only 5kg), 1 treadmill, 1 exercise bike, a non-functional elliptical machine, an abdominal machine and a barely functional universal gym that is useless to anyone that has spent anytime at a fitness center as it will do more harm than good. Furthermore, there is no A/C in the hallway where the gym is located, nor are there towels or drinking water. We have no idea where the picture of the gym on their website comes from. Don't pick this "resort" based on the claims that they have a gym or Internet or else you will be very disappointed. Finally, their travel desk is their reception desk where the staff won't be able to help you with even the most basic travel needs.
Aside from the false claims on their website, there are more problems. The "resort" seems to have odd rules against bringing outside food. There are signs that say "Outside drinks and food is not permitted in the room" and that there is a "corkage charge of Rs.30 per bottle" if any liquids are brought from the outside. Despite these claims, we did bring drinks and food into the room and weren't charged additional fees, but you never know what they will do at this place.
Another problem was that we weren't able to make phone calls from our room. Our only option was to use the phone at reception for a charge of Rs.10 per 5 minutes. This was problematic when we wanted to call the police after the hotel staff took money from our safe and they wouldn't let us use their phone.
Although the "resort" wasn't the worst in the area, after having our money stolen at the hotel by the staff, how can we justify recommending this hotel? There are lot's of choices of accommodations in this area that are a better value, so stay elsewhere. Even if our money wasn't stolen, we still would not recommend this hotel. The hotel does not offer anything worth the amount that they are charging.
Other Notes:
- This hotel caters mainly to tour groups from India, local tourists and very few travelers from outside of India.
- The beach beds and sun umbrellas on Calangute and Baga beach are free from the beach "shacks" as long as you buy something from them. Their costs are very reasonable so it's definitely the way to go in this area.
